Lifers Groove x Maxwell Melvins’s "Drapetomania," Music Video

Freer Records (fka Die Jim Crow) is a music label and platform for prison-impacted musicians. For over a decade, Freer has released music by currently and formerly incarcerated artists, upholding their humanity and spreading a message of resiliance.

Lifers Groove is a supergroup of the label’s artists, including Maxwell Melvins (33 years served) and Simply Naiomi (37 years served), For their first single, Drapetomania, I directed, edited, and animated a music video to tell a story about how the carceral state targets African Americans at a disproportinal rate. I used various story telling techniques, including news clippings, researched statistics, and archival footage from the Library of Congress.
